Michigan Couple Charged in Groomsman’s Death Just Hours After Their Wedding

A newlywed couple from Michigan has been prosecuted after one of their groomsmen was killed by a vehicle hours after their wedding.

According to a release issued by the Flint Police Department on Wednesday, Sept. 4, officers responded to reports of a pedestrian-involved crash on the 1400 block of E. Hamilton on Friday, August 30.

When officers arrived, they discovered 29-year-old Terry Lewis Taylor Jr. with “severe injuries.” Taylor was brought to Hurley Medical Center and pronounced dead, according to officials.

“Further investigation revealed that earlier that day, Taylor Jr had attended a wedding as a groomsman,” according to police. “After the wedding, he was involved in an argument which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was traveling at a high rate of speed and driven by the groom.”

The groom, James Shirah, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder. He is being held without a bond. His wife, Savahna Collier, 21, has been charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Collier secured a $4,000 bond on Wednesday, September 4, according to the Associated Press.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” Genessee County prosecutor David Leyton told the Associated Press. “I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding.”

According to the police complaint, the wedding was held at a pizzeria, followed by a quarrel at a residence.

Taylor was standing in the street in front of the house when he was hit by an SUV purportedly driven by Shirah. According to Leyton, the couple waited a day before contacting police, which made it “more difficult to unravel what happened.”

Taylor is remembered for his love of music, fishing, and riding bikes and four-wheelers, according to his obituary published by the Dodds-Dumanois Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LLC in Flint.

“Terry thoroughly appreciated his music, his children, his family and friends, his dog Kodiak, and eating delicious food. “It was always important to him to have clean teeth and cologne on,” the obituary read.

The Genesee County public defense office informed the Associated Press that no attorney has been appointed to the case as of Thursday, September 5.
