Michigan Grocery Bills Rising: Egg Prices Expected to Increase Further!

2 min read

Race Day Live If you’ve been to the grocery store in Michigan lately, you may have noticed that egg prices are getting higher every week.

Unfortunately, there’s no sign of them coming down anytime soon. Experts warn that egg prices could continue to rise due to inflation, supply chain issues, and an ongoing avian flu outbreak.

Egg Prices Have Skyrocketed in the Past Two Years

According to NerdWallet, the cost of eggs has increased by over 37% in just one year. Before February 2022, a dozen eggs typically cost under $2.

However, prices shot up and reached a shocking $4.82 per dozen in January 2023.

Now, prices remain high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the national average price for eggs in December 2024 was $4.15.

But in Michigan, shoppers are seeing even higher prices. At Aldi in Kalamazoo, eggs recently sold for $5.69 per dozen. In some areas near Detroit, prices have reached nearly $10.

What’s Driving the Price Increase?

Emily Metz, CEO and President of the American Egg Board explained that the main reasons behind the rising prices are the global avian flu outbreak and inflation.

Many egg-laying hens have been lost due to the flu, which has tightened supply and pushed prices up.

“Until we have time without a detection, unfortunately, this very, very tight egg supply is going to continue,” Metz told CNN.

How Much More Will Prices Go Up?

Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t stop here. The USDA predicts that egg prices could rise another 20% in 2025. That means Michigan shoppers may have to budget even more for their groceries in the coming months.

With no clear end in sight, residents will need to find ways to adjust to the rising costs.

Some shoppers are turning to bulk purchases or looking for alternative sources like local farms to save money. Others hope that as supply stabilizes, prices will eventually drop.

For now, though, Michigan shoppers should expect to keep paying more for this essential grocery item.
