Michigan Groom Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Groomsman Just Hours After Wedding

According to local authorities, a newlywed couple from Michigan was arrested just hours after their wedding because the groom allegedly used a car to purposefully run over and kill one of his groomsmen.

The groom, 22-year-old James Shirah of Flint, allegedly plowed over his groomsman with an SUV, killing him, during an argument on August 30, according to the Flint police department’s Facebook page.

Terry Taylor Jr., 29, died at a nearby hospital after being admitted for treatment of severe injuries.

“After the wedding, he was involved in an argument which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was traveling at a high rate of speed and driven by the groom,” the police reported.

Police did not say what Shirah and Taylor had disagreed over before the fatal encounter.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” the Genesee County prosecutor, David Leyton, told CBS News. “I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding.”

According to CBS, the pair married in a local pizzeria before continuing their celebrations at a house.

Taylor was outside the residence hosting the afterparty when Shirah allegedly hit him with his vehicle.

According to Leyton, the newlywed couple fled the scene of the killing and did not notify authorities until the following day. This decision made it “more difficult” for investigators to figure out what transpired, he said.

Police claimed Shirah was detained and charged with second-degree murder.

Shirah’s bride, Savahna Collier, 21, was also detained on charges of being an accessory after the fact to a felony.

The couple was provisionally set to appear in court on Thursday.
