Michigan Man Faces DUI Manslaughter Charge After Florida Extradition

A Michigan man is now facing upgraded charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Florida.

Michael Aoun, 34, from Dearborn Heights, was extradited from Michigan on February 24 in connection with the Florida case, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest after his GPS monitoring device, required for pretrial release, stopped working because it was not kept charged, according to court records from Pinellas County, Florida.

The incident happened on January 22 in Pinellas County. Paul Miller, 37, was working in the median lane, placing flags for a Grand Prix monument, when a Chrysler minivan, traveling at high speed, lost control. The vehicle crossed two bicycle lanes and hit a statue, a light pole, and Miller.

Aoun was initially charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury. Miller, who suffered severe injuries, died on January 28 at a local hospital.

An arraignment on the upgraded charges is scheduled for March 31 in the Sixth Judicial Court of Florida for Pinellas County. The investigation is ongoing.
