ATHENS, MISSISSIPPI — A 17-year-old boy from Monroe County has been charged with murder after authorities say he brutally beat his 73-year-old grandmother to death inside the church they both attended. The shocking crime has left the small Mississippi community heartbroken and searching for answers.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Jadynn Hamilton, 17, was arrested Wednesday night following the death of his grandmother, Ollie Hamilton, a longtime resident of the Athens community and a beloved member of her local congregation.
Deputies said they were called to the church after family members made a disturbing discovery — finding the elderly woman severely beaten near the building’s kitchen area. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Church Members Discover the Victim
Officials say the 911 call came from concerned relatives who went to check on Ollie Hamilton after she failed to return home. When they arrived at the church, they found her lying just inside an outer doorway that led to the kitchen, showing clear signs of a violent assault.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said responding deputies quickly secured the scene and began interviewing witnesses and church members. Based on initial statements, detectives soon identified the victim’s grandson as a person of interest.
Authorities noted that Jadynn Hamilton was at the church during the time of the attack. As investigators gathered more evidence, the teenager was taken into custody for questioning.
Teen Confessed to the Crime
During the investigation, Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook confirmed that Hamilton confessed to killing his grandmother, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators said the 17-year-old had no prior criminal history or known behavioral issues that could explain the outburst.
“This is a tragedy of the worst kind because you’ve got a beloved church member, family member, and community member killed — and you come to find out within 24 hours she was killed by another beloved family member,” Sheriff Crook told the Monroe Journal.
He added that the crime appears to have stemmed from a sudden loss of control:
“If somebody is not able to control their impulses and they reach that point, I don’t think it really matters who the victim is at the time. If it got them to that level of anger, they’re going to lash out at whoever — it just happened to be his grandmother.”
Community in Shock
The Athens community — known for its close-knit families and strong church ties — has been left reeling from the tragedy. Friends and neighbors have described Ollie Hamilton as a kind, gentle woman who spent decades volunteering at her church and helping others.
Sheriff Crook expressed deep sympathy for the grieving family and community members, calling the incident “a tragedy that can tear apart families.”
“I can’t imagine how hard this is on this community,” he said in a statement. “There are so many good people in and around that church and my heart goes out to them and the family. Please keep them in your prayers.”
Sheriff Praises Quick Police Response
Crook also commended the patrol officers and investigators who responded swiftly to the crime scene and apprehended the teenage suspect within hours. Their quick action, he said, helped bring clarity to a devastating and confusing situation.
“This is one of those cases that will stay with everyone involved for a very long time,” Crook said. “No one expects something this horrific to happen in their own church, much less within their own family.”

Investigation and Legal Process
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Hamilton has been charged with murder and is currently being held pending further court proceedings. Because of his age, it remains unclear whether he will be charged as an adult, though prosecutors are expected to make that determination in the coming days.
Authorities have not released additional details about the motive or events leading up to the deadly attack. The case remains under investigation as officials await the results of a medical examiner’s report and continue interviewing family members and churchgoers.
Local clergy members are planning a community prayer vigil this weekend to honor Ollie Hamilton’s memory and offer support to her loved ones.
Residents of Monroe County are being encouraged to reach out for mental health or grief counseling through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health helpline at 1-877-210-8513, which offers free and confidential support 24/7.
