If the bear doesn’t leave, bear spray can help. And in the rare case of an attack, fight back—bears usually back off when they meet resistance.
Michigan’s black bear population is now estimated at over 12,000, according to NPR, and it’s growing every year.
In 2022, the DNR counted over 10,000 bears in the Upper Peninsula and more than 2,000 in the Lower Peninsula.
