A North Carolina airport is closed Sunday after a single-engine plane crashed while attempting to land, killing several people, according to officials.
The Cirrus SR22 plane crashed near the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport on Saturday at 5:55 p.m. local time, according to an email from the National Transportation Safety Board to USA TODAY. The airport is located near Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, approximately 90 miles south of Virginia Beach.
The plane crashed into the airport’s woodland area, according to the National Park Service. Witnesses reported that the plane was attempting to land at the airport.
Following the crash, the plane caught fire, which was eventually extinguished by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local departments.

“Multiple passenger fatalities have been confirmed,” the park service stated.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, four persons were on board the jet when it crashed. The agency was unable to comment on the passengers’ conditions.
When does the First Flight Airport reopen?
The airport will be closed until further notice, according to the National Park Service. The Wright Brothers National Memorial will likewise stay closed on Sunday.
According to CBS 17, the airport was closed Saturday night following the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board is overseeing the inquiry into the tragedy. The Federal Aviation Administration was also notified.
