North Wilkesboro Speedway, famous for its short-track racing, has sparked intrigue with the recent discovery of a sinkhole that may lead to a hidden moonshine cave.
During preparations for the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race in 2024, track workers stumbled upon cracks in the grandstands. Upon closer inspection, they uncovered an open area of about 700 square feet beneath the stands.
Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports, shared insights on the find. He mentioned hearing stories about an old moonshine still rumoured to have operated beneath the grandstands during renovations in 2022.
While they haven’t found the still yet, they did uncover a small cave and an interior wall, suggesting it could have been an ideal spot for illegal liquor production and hiding from the law.
The discovery adds an intriguing twist to the ongoing renovations at North Wilkesboro Speedway. As the track undergoes foundation repair and concrete replacement, attention has turned to investigating this newfound area.
Swift acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed excitement about the unexpected discovery.
The sinkhole has created a “race before the race” scenario, as the affected area lies in the front stretch grandstand, offering prime views of the track. Despite the additional workload, preparations continue for NASCAR All-Star Race Week, with the team determined to ensure the venue is ready for the event.
