Tennessee residents will soon have an easier time identifying real law enforcement officers.
A new uniform patch was approved on Friday, following WSMV4’s Thin Blurred Line investigation.
The patch will help Tennesseans quickly recognize security guards and determine if they are off-duty police officers during an emergency.
The state commission that certifies police officers approved the patch for law enforcement to wear while working off-duty security.
WSMV4’s investigation revealed that some people, not certified as law enforcement, were wearing police uniforms and badges.
Many of them were employed by the Nashville-based security company Solaren. One individual was even accused of using a blue light to pull over a citizen.
Once the patch is introduced, off-duty police officers working security outside their city or town will be required to wear it.
