NYPD Publishes Video of Moonra Durham Shooting Incident Involving Officers

New York City police report that on Friday, January 10, 2025, at approximately 9:43 p.m., Sergeant Salzman, along with Officers Okafor, Wilson, Zaheer, and additional officers from the 69th Precinct, were transporting a prisoner to the precinct following an unrelated arrest.

While stopped at the intersection of East 80th Street and Flatlands Avenue, the officers heard a gunshot nearby and observed 50-year-old Moonra Durham fleeing northbound on East 80th Street.

Sergeant Salzman and Officer Zaheer pursued Durham on foot, while Officers Wilson and Okafor followed in their vehicle. The officers issued verbal commands for Durham to stop as they pursued him.

Upon reaching 754 East 80th Street, Durham took cover behind a tree and pointed a firearm at Officer Zaheer before turning and aiming at Sergeant Salzman.

In response, Sergeant Salzman fired three shots, Officer Okafor fired four, Officer Wilson fired two, and Officer Zaheer fired four rounds from their service weapons. Durham was struck by the gunfire and taken into custody without further incident.

Emergency responders transported Durham to Brookdale University Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree (police officer), Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm in the First and Second Degree, Attempted Aggravated Assault Upon a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and related offenses.
