Race Day Live Oklahoma’s Attorney General, Gentner Drummond, has officially requested the denial of clemency for Wendell Arden Grissom, a death row inmate convicted of murder.
Grissom is scheduled to be executed in March for killing 23-year-old Amber Mathews in November 2005.
The crime happened during a burglary attempt at a home near Watonga, northwest of Oklahoma City. While Amber Mathews tragically lost her life, another woman and two children survived the attack.
Grissom’s accomplice, Jessie Johns, is already serving a life sentence without parole for his role in the crime.
Drummond described the murder as a monstrous act and called Grissom a cold-blooded killer. He urged the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to reject any plea for mercy, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the pain caused to Mathews’ family.
Grissom’s execution has sparked debates about justice and clemency. Supporters of the death penalty argue that the punishment fits the gravity of the crime, while opponents stress the importance of evaluating clemency requests with care.

The board’s decision will weigh heavily on the victim’s family and Oklahoma’s broader conversation about capital punishment.
Drummond has consistently supported strict justice in cases involving heinous crimes. His request reflects a commitment to ensuring accountability for those convicted of violent offenses.
The case has drawn attention to Oklahoma’s justice system and its handling of clemency requests for death row inmates.
As March approaches, all eyes will be on the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to see how they respond to Drummond’s call for clemency denial.
