LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Hundreds of people gathered at the Oklahoma State Capitol on February 17 to protest against what they call attacks on people’s rights.
The protesters demanded the impeachment of President Trump and voiced concerns about government policies.
7News’ OU Fellow Michael Buchanan was at the scene to witness the demonstration firsthand.
Nationwide Protests Led by 50501 Movement
The Oklahoma protest was part of a larger movement led by a national organization called 50501. The group was formed earlier this year and has been organizing protests across the country.
Members believe that recent policies and actions by the government are violating people’s rights.
“We, as a people, should be afraid and need to work together to get Trump out, Musk out,” said Peggy Howe, one of the protest speakers.
“I think people should be afraid that things are being done in this country that are illegal.”
50501 Movement’s Goals and Concerns
Rebekah Calandro, a representative of 50501 in Oklahoma, explained that the movement is focused on community outreach and standing against certain policies from the Trump administration.
“Firstly, we want to defend our constitution,” Calandro said. “Our constitution is not being upheld by our government currently.
The second thing we want is to limit executive order overreach, as well as any illegal legislative actions by local and state governments.”

Protesters Also Criticize Oklahoma’s Education Policies
While most of the protest focused on Trump and his administration, demonstrators also voiced concerns about Oklahoma’s State Superintendent Ryan Walters.
Many believe his policies are harming the state’s public education system.
“I believe that he mostly cares about himself,” Howe said. “He has shown over the last two years that he doesn’t care about the kids. I think he’s on a political campaign for himself.”
Community Voices Demand Action
Protesters emphasized the importance of standing together to fight for their rights. Many called on the public to stay informed, get involved, and continue advocating for change.
As protests continue across the nation, Oklahoma demonstrators say they will keep pushing for political accountability and reforms.
