Race Day Live Oklahoma City (KSWO) – On January 23, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Nations stepped into a legal dispute by supporting a lawsuit against two district attorneys in Oklahoma.
The lawsuit targets Matt Ballard and Carol Iski, accusing them of violating federal law by trying to prosecute tribal members in state court.
According to the tribes, these cases should be handled in federal or tribal courts, not state courts.
They claim that the district attorneys are overstepping their legal boundaries and ignoring federal laws that protect their jurisdiction.
The lawsuit aims to hold the district attorneys accountable for what the tribes believe is an illegal attempt to exert authority over tribal members.
The tribal leaders are firm in their position, arguing that these actions threaten the principle of tribal sovereignty.
They stress that the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to affirm their reservation status should protect their rights.
As Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. explained, the Cherokee Nation has been committed to justice, investing $74 million into its justice system and collaborating with federal, state, and local law enforcement.
Hoskin emphasized that the Cherokee Nation takes its role in protecting the public seriously, having filed over 25,000 cases in the past year alone.
“We work every day with law enforcement across all levels to keep Oklahomans safe. We will continue to do so while ensuring that the law is respected,” said Hoskin.

Bill Anoatubby, Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, also backed the lawsuit. He pointed out that the tribes have long called for better partnerships between different levels of government. He reiterated the importance of following the rules to avoid compromising public safety.
The Choctaw Nation’s leadership also voiced their support. Chief Gary Batton emphasized that the state should not have authority over crimes committed by tribal members within tribal lands.
The Choctaw Nation fully backs the Department of Justice’s efforts to defend tribal sovereignty and uphold the U.S. Constitution.
In summary, the three tribes are standing united in their fight to defend their legal rights and ensure that their people are tried in the appropriate courts.
Their involvement in this lawsuit is a critical move to protect the sovereignty and legal authority of Native American nations in Oklahoma.
