West Valley City — After a man was discovered dead at a West Valley apartment complex on Tuesday night, police began investigating his death as a homicide.
The West Valley City Police Department reported on social media Tuesday night that a passerby saw “a person with an apparent gunshot wound lying in the parking lot” of an apartment complex between 3300 S 1200 W.
Officers were summoned to the area shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and police reported that the victim looked to be an adult male. Lt. Bill Merritt of West Valley City Police told ABC4.com that authorities were initially unable to locate the victim until they were flagged down.
The male victim was discovered dead, but the cause of death and the deceased’s name had not been determined as of late Tuesday night. While the culprit remains at large, Merritt stated that officials do not believe there is a threat to the public.
“There’s some evidence on-scene — that we can’t quite talk about just yet — that leads us to believe this was not random,” Merritt told reporters. “This was not a random crime victim. We feel there was some connection between the suspect and the victim.”
Part of the apartment complex was cordoned off Tuesday night until cops and the forensics team could finish their investigation.
“We’re confident that we’re gonna be able to gain some leads and figure out who it was that did this, and we’ll bring them to justice,” Merritt told the media.
