All Wegmans locations are recalling packages of Impossible Foods meatless sausage because they may contain foreign material.
A grocery chain shared on its website this past Friday that it has recalled certain meatless products after discovering an “aluminum fastener” in them. The recall involves the Spicy Ground Sausage and Savory Ground Sausage Meat from Impossible Foods.
All Wegmans locations have sold the recalled items in 14-ounce packages. The UPC number for the delicious meatless sausage is 816697021088. The meatless sausage, known for its spicy flavor, carries the UPC 816697021095.
Items affected by the recall feature lot numbers from ASH2409501 to ASH249601 and have best-by dates between June 28, 2025, and January 15, 2026.
Wegmans operates in eight states: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, along with the District of Columbia.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of food recalls. A recent study by Gallup carried out from July 1 to July 21, revealed that 37 percent of Americans reported having thrown away or returned a food item in the last year because of a recall or food safety advisory. More than half of the respondents indicated that they had chosen not to purchase a product or brand because of a recall or advisory.
A report from August by Traceone reveals that the primary cause for food recalls is the presence of undeclared allergens. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates that manufacturers indicate whether any of the nine major food allergens—peanuts, wheat, milk, tree nuts, soy, egg, crustaceans (shellfish), fish, and sesame—are prominently displayed on food packaging.
The second most frequent cause is linked to bacterial contamination, including the presence of salmonella, E. coli, or listeria. This summer, a significant listeria outbreak linked to the deli meat brand Boar’s Head led to 10 fatalities and numerous hospitalizations.
Additional factors contributing to recalls involve the discovery of foreign items or incorrect labeling of a product.
The U.S. government has ramped up efforts to enhance food safety measures in recent years, yet experts suggest that there is still room for improvement. Marion Nestle, a professor of food studies and public health at New York University, previously shared with Newsweek, “The issue with food safety is not only down to regulations but workplace culture.”
“We have solid regulations established,” Nestle added. “Every type of food, whether it’s under the oversight of the USDA for meat and poultry or the FDA for most other items with a few exceptions, is required to be produced following meticulously crafted and implemented protocols aimed at minimizing pathogens.”
“These plans must be adhered to closely, and production should be overseen to ensure compliance,” Nestle stated. “When the plans are crafted, adhered to, and overseen effectively, the food should remain safe for everyone.”
