RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA — A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy has died after being shot while responding to a domestic violence call Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed. The fallen deputy, identified as Andrew Nunez, was a six-year veteran of the department and is being remembered for his dedication, compassion, and service to the community.
Tragic Shooting During a Routine Call
Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Deputy Nunez was responding to a domestic violence report involving an armed suspect when the situation escalated. While attempting to contain the suspect, Nunez was shot once in the head. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries around 1 p.m.
Dicus expressed deep sorrow, noting that the department has faced similar tragedies too often in recent years.
“We’re embedded in sorrow. Unfortunately, for our department, this has happened way too often,” he said.
Remembering Deputy Andrew Nunez
Deputy Nunez leaves behind his wife, a 2-year-old daughter, his mother, and four siblings. The sheriff added that Nunez and his wife were also expecting another child.
“He was a wonderful father. He was a wonderful deputy sheriff,” Dicus said, describing Nunez as someone who always prioritized both family and duty.
State Leaders Express Condolences
California Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement offering condolences to Nunez’s family and colleagues.
“On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Nunez,” Newsom said.
“His courage, compassion, and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement. We honor his life and service with gratitude; may his sacrifice never be forgotten.”
The governor ordered that flags at the State Capitol and the Capitol Annex Swing Space be flown at half-staff in honor of the slain deputy.
Suspect Injured During Pursuit
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle. The chase ended in Upland when the suspect crashed into another vehicle. Authorities said the suspect sustained injuries but is currently in stable condition and remains under guard.
The sheriff revealed that the car involved in the crash was driven by an off-duty narcotics officer, who inadvertently helped bring the pursuit to an end.
“I’m very thankful that he brought this to a close,” Dicus said. “In addition to potentially assaulting others with a firearm, the speeds that were reached with that motorcycle could have caused even more tragedy.”
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson confirmed that investigators are treating the incident as the murder of a peace officer, a charge that carries significant legal consequences in California.
“We are looking at this as a murder of a peace officer, which makes it a significant case,” Anderson said.
He added that prosecutors expect to make charging decisions within the next two days, following interviews and review of evidence.

Deputy Nunez’s sacrifice underscores the inherent dangers of law enforcement and the emotional toll such losses bring to communities.
