(Dickinson, Texas) – (KNUE) – In Texas, people are usually held accountable for their crimes.
However, a recent case in Texas is sparking outrage after a Texas City man received probation despite being found guilty of hiding the body of a missing mother in her car’s trunk in 2022.
According to KHOU, 49-year-old Christopher Maldonado was convicted of tampering with a corpse.
What Happened in 2022?
24-year-old Angela Mitchell was reported missing to the Dickinson Police on May 5, 2022. Unlike her, her friends grew concerned when she failed to pick up her son.
Her cousin used the “Find My Friends” app to track her iPhone to a location near Maldonado’s house.
It took Texas City police six days to locate her vehicle, where they discovered her decomposing body in the trunk.
The medical examiner couldn’t determine the exact cause of death but ruled out natural causes and drug overdose. Detectives learned that Mitchell was a sex worker, and Maldonado was her last known client.
Shocking Testimony During the Trial
During the trial, a friend testified that they were paid $200 to move Mitchell’s car the night she disappeared.
Maldonado’s ex-wife also testified that he had strangled her in the past. He currently faces a pending felony charge for strangulation assault.
In the end, Maldonado was sentenced to 120 days in jail and 10 years of probation — a punishment that seems light considering the circumstances surrounding Mitchell’s death.
