A shooting near the Tennessee State University campus in Nashville on Saturday evening killed one person and injured at least nine others, according to authorities.
The deceased was a 24-year-old guy, and at least three of the injured are under the age of 18, according to the Nashville Police Department’s social media post. None of the people involved in the shooting were identified.
In a briefing Saturday night, Nashville Police spokesman Brooke Reese said five of the victims were brought to nearby hospitals by ambulance and five more were dropped off by private vehicles.
“At this point, there are 10 victims who have been confirmed to have been involved in that gunfire, one of which is deceased,” Reese said a news conference.
Some of those being treated at nearby hospitals “are also suspected to have been involved in the gunfire,” Reese said.
Kendra Loney, a representative for the Nashville Fire Department, stated that all nine of the victims were thought to have been shot.
According to the Tennessean newspaper, the institution sent a text alert to students at 5:30 p.m. local time, advising them that there was an active shooter outside campus. The specifics of the incident and what led up to it were yet unknown.
According to CBS station WTVF, the incident occurred when TSU was celebrating homecoming this weekend.
According to Loney, Nashville Fire Department firefighters were already in the vicinity after taking part in an NSU homecoming march.
“As that gunfire erupted, our crews were right here where that occurred,” according to Loney.
Loney stated that numerous firefighters originally mistook the gunshots for fireworks because they had been let off earlier as part of the school celebrations.
“Our personnel recounted to me some moments where they ripped off their belts and did things like, use those as tourniquets because they did not have their medical bags with them,” claimed Loney.
There was no immediate information on whether any suspects had been apprehended. The identify of the person killed was likewise not revealed.
