Sikh Community Rallies Behind Family After Indian Immigrant Employee Found Dead in Walmart Oven

Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old Walmart worker, was found dead in the store’s walk-in baking oven on Saturday. The Sikh community in Halifax, Canada, is coming together to support his family.

People in the community who knew the family said that Kaur and her mother came to Canada from India about two years ago and had been working together at Walmart.

Lawyers for Kaur said that her mother, who found the body, is disturbed.

“The thing that happened happened the first day I saw her.” The poor thing was upset. NBC News spoke with Satnam Randhawa, a board member of the Halifax Maritime Sikh Society. “She was really in a lot of pain.”

The local police say they are still looking into Kaur’s death and have not yet decided on the cause and method of death.

“The whole thing has shocked the community,” Harjit Seyan, head of the Sikh Society, told the Canadian news show Global News. “We’re very upset.”

The Sikh Society has pulled together a community-wide show of support over the last week. A GoFundMe account set up to help the family has raised almost 80,000 Canadian dollars.

The fundraiser talked about what happened before Kaur’s body was found in the oven. They said that her mother became worried when she hadn’t seen her at the store for an hour. She asked where she was and called her phone several times before she finally found the horrible scene.

Randhawa said that Kaur and her mother often went to the Sikh Society gurdwara, which is a place of prayer. Now, people in the group are trying to get Kaur’s father and brother, who is 10, who are still in India to leave.

“Without a doubt, the immediate family is shocked.” “They’re going through a rough patch,” Seyan said.

The Walmart where the death took place is now closed until further notice.

“We are heartbroken, and our thoughts are with our coworker and their family.” A company representative told NBC News, “Our main goal is still to care for our employees and give them the help they need.” “The police have said that this is a very complicated case, and the investigation is still going on.”
