Social Security Announces Big Changes: New Direct Deposit Process Explained

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is updating its identity verification policies to better protect Social Security records and benefits from fraud.

These changes will affect both new and current beneficiaries.

Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, stated that the agency has relied on outdated identity verification methods for too long. The new procedures aim to strengthen security while improving service.

Under the new rules, beneficiaries who cannot use their My Social Security account for identity verification will need to visit their local Social Security office. Previously, these issues were often handled over the phone.

Additionally, any changes to direct deposit information must be made through a My Social Security account or in person, as phone requests for these changes will no longer be accepted.

The agency will also speed up the processing time for direct deposit changes to one business day, down from the previous 30-day period.

These updates, which will take effect on March 31, will impact more than 72.5 million people who receive Social Security benefits, including retirees and children.
