Race Day Live (St. Louis, MO) – A tragic incident occurred in St. Louis, where a mother lost her life and her 2-year-old son is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while walking on the street, likely to steer clear of an icy sidewalk.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) reported that, according to an initial investigation, Shirley Howard, 39, was pushing a stroller westbound in a bike lane on West Florissant Ave. on Monday, Jan. 20, when she and her son were struck.
Officials observed that Howard was probably using the bike lane due to icy conditions on the sidewalks.
A driver, reported to be an 80-year-old man, was traveling east when he reportedly swerved into the bike lane, tragically hitting a woman and injuring her child before crashing through a snowbank and into a house.
The SLMPD reported that the child was promptly transported to a hospital, noting that the driver stayed at the scene and worked with law enforcement. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for monitoring.
A spokesperson for the SLMPD announced on Monday, Jan. 27, that the investigation is still in progress.
Johnson remarked that Shirley was a devoted mother to her two young sons, Amir and Adonis.
“She was always there for them,” Johnson recalled, describing his sister as lively and sociable.
“I suppose she was on her way to the local store to pick up a few items for her home,” Johnson mentioned to KSDK. “She was merely a stone’s throw away from the home.” My sister has two older sons aged 19 and 20. She resided with my mother and the two youngest children.
