Teen Arrested for Making Violent Online Threats Targeting Rancho Mirage High School

Authorities detained a 17-year-old kid in Cathedral City after accusing him of making violent threats against Rancho Mirage High School online. The teenager’s home was checked, but no weapons were discovered.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies received a report on Wednesday, September 4, about 6 p.m., that someone had posted threats of school violence online. The FBI assisted in identifying the source of the threats, which were made from a property in the 27-000 block of Ventura Drive in Cathedral City.

The following day, a school resource deputy recognized the teen as the suspect. Deputies and Cathedral City police officers investigated his residence, discovering proof of the online threats but no firearms, according to the sheriff’s department. They apprehended the teenager and placed him in the juvenile hall.

His name was not revealed due to his age. The sheriff’s department encouraged anyone with information about the threats to contact Deputy Fongsamout Hohman at 760-836-1600.
