Texas is holding more immigrant detainees than any other state in the U.S., with many detention centers located near San Antonio.
Newly released federal data reveals the growing number of detainees as U.S. immigration centers reach near capacity. This comes as the Trump administration continues its push for more arrests.
High Numbers in South Texas ICE Processing Center
The South Texas ICE Processing Center in Pearsall, about 55 miles southwest of San Antonio, has the second-highest number of detainees in the country, averaging 1,680 people daily.
This facility is one of several in Texas contributing to the state’s leading position in immigrant detentions.
Top Detention Centers Across the U.S.
The Adams County Detention Center in Natchez, Mississippi, currently holds the most detainees, with an average of 2,154 people per day.
In Texas, the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center, about 55 miles southeast of San Antonio, detains around 1,130 people daily.
Eight detention centers in Texas rank among the nation’s top 20 facilities, each holding at least 800 immigrants for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Nationwide Detention Statistics
As of the latest data, ICE is detaining 41,169 people across various facilities in the U.S. Nearly 55% of these detainees have no criminal record, with many others having committed minor offenses such as traffic violations.
However, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) reported that the ICE detention statistics have some missing and incorrect data.
Notably, the numbers do not include detainees at the U.S. naval facility in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
