North Carolina, USA — On Sunday, more than a dozen new laws will become law in North Carolina.
Some of the changes made to the new laws are to the standards for changes in human trafficking, juvenile justice, and sex crimes.
So you know what to expect, WXII has made a list of these new laws:
From Sunday on, 16- to 17-year-olds who commit certain crimes could be charged as adults right away. The “Raise the Age” campaign was made to keep young offenders out of the adult criminal justice system. In the United States until 2019, North Carolina was the only state that charged all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults, even for small crimes. This new law also spells out how to move cases involving juveniles who have been charged. Triad police have seen a rise in the number of serious crimes made by teens and young adults. This page has more information about HB 834.
The Department of Labor will start making teaching about human trafficking on December 1. The new law also changes what a victim is and how much someone is punished for hiring a prostitute for the first time. To learn more about House Bill 971, click here.
