Threads Launches Custom Feeds Tool Following Swift Testing Phase

2 min read

The debate over who will obtain all of X’s users now that it’s a complete disaster continues. Threads has just started rolling out its own custom feeds capability to compete with Bluesky. Bluesky has long been known for its custom feeds, and Threads users can now join in. Meta said last week that it was testing bespoke feeds, so those tests must have been successful. Either that or they seek to stymie Bluesky’s growing momentum.

Simply put, the functionality lets users pin topic-based feeds to the app’s home screen. This allows consumers to scroll through more feeds than the algorithmic “for you” feed. This is a very nice thing because Thread’s existing “for you” algorithm is readily influenced by simply posting something like “Who likes cats?” I’ve seen 400 posts like that on my feed, all begging for engagement. I like cats, but come on.

In any case, users can start a custom feed by searching for terms and selecting the “…” option. A feed will be constructed depending on the keyword, but the toolset allows for more precise modifications. Users, for example, can modify each feed by adding certain profiles. Thread enthusiasts can set up to 128 custom feeds.

Threads has a distinct advantage over Bluesky when it comes to bespoke feeds. Making one on Bluesky is a process. It took me around two seconds to create a Star Trek feed on Threads.

Despite Bluesky’s ongoing expansion, it remains a minor player in comparison to Threads. Bluesky recently reported 20 million users, which is fantastic, but Threads boasts over 275 million members. Threads is also gaining about a million users every day, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri’s recent post.
