Race Day Live Tony Dungy, the legendary NFL coach, has put rumors about him running for a Michigan Senate seat to rest.

Earlier this week, a report from The Hill suggested Dungy might be a candidate for the position once U.S. Senator Gary Peters’s term ends in 2027.

In a post on X, Dungy made it clear that he had no plans to run for office. He wrote, “Not sure where this idea came from, but it didn’t come from me.

I love my home state of Michigan. I pray they will elect a Senator who honors the Lord and leads the people well. But I can assure you it won’t be me. Number 1, I’m not a politician and Number 2 I live in Florida.”

Dungy’s response came after speculation grew around the Michigan Senate race. U.S. Senator Gary Peters, who currently holds the seat, announced he would not seek reelection after his term ends.

With his departure, several names were mentioned as potential candidates, including Dungy. However, the 69-year-old, originally from Jackson, Michigan, made it clear that he was not interested in entering politics.

Dungy is best known for his incredible career in the NFL, becoming the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl in 2007 with the Indianapolis Colts.
