Howard Lutnick, a billionaire and Commerce Secretary under President Donald Trump, has sparked controversy this week over his comments about Social Security payments.
Lutnick’s remarks, made during an appearance on the “All-In” podcast, have upset many people. He suggested that only “fraudsters” would complain if a Social Security check didn’t arrive on time.
“If Social Security didn’t send out their checks this month,” Lutnick said, “my 94-year-old mother wouldn’t call and complain.
She’d assume something got messed up and that she’d get it next month. A fraudster is the one who makes the loudest noise, screaming and complaining.”
However, people who rely on Social Security to survive might also be quick to raise concerns if their payments are delayed.
Lutnick added that for Elon Musk and DOGE, the “easiest way to find the fraudster is to stop payments and listen.”
“Whoever screams is the one stealing,” he said. “Come on, your mother, 80-year-olds, 90-year-olds — they trust the government.”
