Two men from outside the Tri-State area have been arrested for using counterfeit money in Evansville. Police say the men tried to spend fake $100 bills at multiple stores and restaurants.
The Evansville Police Department (EPD) first got a call on February 13 from McAlister’s Deli on Green River Road. A man had tried to pay for his meal with a fake $100 bill.
More Cases Reported
Soon after the first report, other businesses also reported counterfeit money. Chick-fil-A and Office Depot were among the places that received fake bills.
Security cameras from these locations recorded the same SUV at each store. This helped police connect the incidents and track down the suspects.
How the Fake Bills Were Made?
Police discovered that the counterfeit money was real $10 bills that had been altered. The bills were washed to remove the original ink and then reprinted to look like $100 bills.
This method can make fake money harder to detect because the bills still feel like real currency. However, security checks and close inspection helped store employees notice the scam.
