The U.S. Department of Education is investigating allegations of sex-based harassment mishandling at Nex Benedict’s suburban Tulsa school district. This inquiry comes after the recent death of Nex, a 16-year-old student who faced bullying related to their gender identity.
The investigation ensures schools provide safe environments and addresses broader concerns about transgender rights. U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona expressed devastation over Nex’s death and emphasized the responsibility to protect all students.
Owasso schools, where Nex attended, consider the allegations unsupported but are committed to cooperating with federal officials during the investigation. The focus will be on harassment reported during the current school year.
The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ rights group, complained and made the investigation public. The President, Kelley Robinson, called for the inquiry to prevent similar tragedies and hold those accountable for Nex’s death.
The investigation will examine whether the school district violated laws preventing discrimination based on sex or any disability, focusing on reports during the current school year.
Several former Owasso students reported facing bullying over their gender and sexual identities. The federal investigation will be limited to instances reported during the current school year.
Police are investigating whether Nex was targeted in the February 7 altercation that preceded their death due to their gender identity. The cause of Nex’s death remains uncertain.
