USDA Approves D-SNAP Assistance in State Following Hurricane Helene; Deadline Looms

2 min read

Another state has gained approval to implement D-SNAP. In this example, Hurricane Helene has affected Virginia and all of its disaster zones. This tropical storm wreaked havoc on Virginians’ plans.

As a result, the USDA must assist all families who require financial assistance in order to purchase food and avoid food insecurity. Keep in mind that the USDA believes that about 22,858 households are eligible for this grocery relief program. In total, around nine counties are affected.

Who qualifies for D-SNAP? When is the deadline?

Many Virginians may not qualify for Food Stamps, but they are eligible for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payments. Of course, there are strict requirements to qualify.

The USDA has established eligible catastrophe-related expenses and disaster income restrictions. Other states that have recently qualified for D-SNAP include Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.

Citizens residing in affected areas of Virginia will be able to apply for D-SNAP in person until November 22, 2024.

Which counties in Virginia are eligible for D-SNAP?

According to USDA, there are nine:

Wythe, Wise, Washington, Tazewell, Smyth, Scott, Grayson, Carroll, Bland. Those who apply and are eligible will receive a month’s benefits. In reality, it will be equivalent to the full amount for a SNAP household of their size.

The D-SNAP money could then be used to purchase groceries at designated stores. A waiver has been established to allow eligible clients to purchase hot meals ready to eat or hot meals to go in participating establishments or restaurants.

Waivers have also been allowed for the ten-day reporting requirement for food purchased with Food Stamps and lost due to power outages. Remember that the hot food waiver will last until December 10, 2024. Apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this money.
