Murder Charges and Initial Court Appearance
A Utah woman accused of fatally shooting her husband following an argument over an affair she was having has appeared in court for his murder.
Last week, Jennifer Gledhill, 42, pleaded not guilty to the murder of her husband, Matthew Johnson, 51, who was killed in September 2024. Johnson was a member of the Utah National Guard and was reported missing when he did not show up to work.
Gledhill was arrested in October last year after a man she was allegedly having an affair with told police that she admitted to killing her husband while he slept at their Cottonwood Heights home. His body has yet to be found.
Gledhill and Johnson had a heated argument during an alcohol-fuelled night, where she confessed to infidelity, according to a police report.
Details of the Alleged Murder
“The defendant told the informant that she shot Mr. Johnson [the next day] as he slept in their bed. She told the informant that she put Mr. Johnson’s body into a rooftop storage container, slid him down the stairs of their home, and loaded his body into the back of their minivan,” Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said.
Gill added that Gledhill “then took her husband’s body north, dug a hole, and buried him in a shallow grave.”
Attempts to Cover Up the Crime
Prosecutors suspect that after the alleged murder, she destroyed Johnson’s phone, drove his truck to another area in the neighborhood, and took her own vehicle to a car wash. A neighbor reported witnessing Gledhill’s parents assisting her in cleaning the house until nearly midnight on September 24.
She was allegedly captured on CCTV “thoroughly” cleaning her car post-incident, and police matched her phone’s GPS data to the location where the truck was eventually discovered.
Key Evidence Against Gledhill
Gill said that a person claiming to be Gledhill’s lover turned over message screenshots and audio recordings to the authorities.
“The informant said that he noticed bruises all over the defendant’s body, and when asked about them, the defendant said they were from moving Mr. Johnson’s body and cleaning their house,” Gill said.
Investigators also found forensic evidence inside the couple’s home, including traces of blood that had been cleaned up but were detected using luminol testing. Authorities believe Gledhill went to great lengths to cover up the crime, including disposing of Johnson’s belongings and attempting to create an alibi.
A Tumultuous Relationship
Court documents indicate that the couple was embroiled in a bitter divorce and custody dispute involving their three children, aged 11, 7, and 5. The documents suggest Johnson had concerns about Gledhill’s behavior leading up to his disappearance, citing previous conflicts and allegations of domestic disputes.
Neighbors reported hearing loud arguments from the couple’s home in the months leading up to Johnson’s murder. One neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled a particularly intense fight where Johnson was allegedly heard saying, “You’re going to regret this.”
Legal Proceedings and Upcoming Court Date
Gledhill is expected to return to court later this month, where prosecutors will present further evidence against her. Legal experts predict a lengthy trial, as Gledhill’s defense team has already signaled their intent to challenge the prosecution’s evidence, arguing that without a body, there is no definitive proof of Johnson’s death.
Despite this, prosecutors remain confident in their case. “We have strong forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and digital records that place Jennifer Gledhill at the center of this crime,” Gill said. “We will pursue justice for Matthew Johnson and his family.”
Public Interest and Ongoing Developments
As the trial date approaches, the case continues to garner national attention, highlighting issues of domestic violence, infidelity, and the lengths some may go to in order to cover up their crimes. The outcome of this case will determine not only Gledhill’s fate but also the future of the couple’s three children, who are currently in the care of Johnson’s relatives.
