WhatsApp announced on Thursday that it will begin providing voice message transcripts. The Meta-owned firm claims that the new function will come in handy whether you’re on the go or in a noisy environment where you can’t hear a voice message. A similar feature was promised for Apple’s Message app, a major WhatsApp competitor, with the release of iOS 17.
Voice messages can now be transcribed into text, allowing you to keep up with conversations even if you are unable (or unwilling) to listen to them. WhatsApp states that its transcripts are generated on your device and cannot be read by others.
To enable the new WhatsApp function, navigate to your settings, pick the “Chats” section, and then press “Voice message transcripts”. From there, you may choose your transcript language.
After you enable the function, you can acquire a transcript of a voice message by long-pressing it and selecting the “transcribe” option. It will not automatically transcribe all messages for you.
Voice message transcripts will be available globally in select languages within the next few weeks, according to the business.
