11 Years Later Trial Begins for Man Accused in 14-Year-Old Girl’s Death Found in Mesa Dumpster

MESA, Ariz. — Claudia Lucero, 14, was sexually assaulted and killed in Mesa more than ten years ago. The guy who is now accused of killing her is on trial for the crime.

Alex Madrid is being tried for the murder of a Westwood High School student in 2013. The trial just started. They are accusing the 42-year-old of murder, theft, and leaving a dead body behind.

Someone raped and killed Lucero, and then her body was dumped in a dumpster on Brown Road in Mesa.

Madrid was Lucero’s mother’s ex-boyfriend, but they were no longer together. Madrid had recently moved out of the family home.

The prosecutors told the jury that Madrid had no reason to be at the family’s apartment on December 5, 2013, when Lucero was getting ready for school by himself.

Judges said Madrid “strangled every last breath out” of the teen and then arranged her room by putting some of her things in a storage container to make it look like she ran away from home.

Prosecutors say that after putting the victim in a dumpster, the defendant drove to a court date he had that day for a small citation and then went about his day as usual.

Most likely, the trial will go on for another few weeks in Maricopa County Superior Court. The prosecutors told the court in 2014 that they would seek the death sentence for Madrid if he was found guilty of the crimes.
