Race Day Live Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has proposed a constitutional amendment that could allow former President Donald Trump to serve a third term in the White House.
Ogles argued that this change is necessary for the country to sustain strong leadership during challenging times.
His proposal aims to amend the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits U.S. presidents to two terms in office.
The amendment proposed by Ogles states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms.”
It also includes provisions for individuals who have acted as president for more than two years during another president’s term, limiting them to two terms.
Currently, Trump is barred from running for a third term due to the 22nd Amendment, which has been in effect since 1951.
However, Ogles believes Trump’s leadership is vital to reversing what he describes as years of economic decline and political instability.
In a statement, Ogles said, “President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years. He must be given the time necessary to restore America to greatness.”
Trump has occasionally joked about the idea of serving a third term. Following his 2024 presidential election victory,
Trump quipped to House Republicans during a meeting, “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you do something.
Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’” While his comments were reportedly made in jest, they sparked discussions about his potential future in politics.
Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee clarified, “That was a joke. It was a joke,” emphasizing that no serious plans were behind the remarks.
Despite the playful tone of some of Trump’s statements, he has publicly denied any interest in pursuing a third term.
Speaking to Time magazine last year, Trump said, “I wouldn’t be in favor of a challenge. Not for me. I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job.”
Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, highlighted Trump’s early achievements in his most recent term, praising executive actions taken within days of his inauguration.
These actions included steps to address border security, increase energy production, and withdraw from international agreements like the World Health Organization.

Ogles remarked, “In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity.”
The proposal for a constitutional amendment faces significant hurdles. Amending the Constitution requires approval by two-thirds of both the House and Senate and ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures.
While Ogles’ proposal reflects the strong support Trump continues to receive within parts of the Republican Party, it is unclear if there is enough backing to push such a significant change forward.
As debates about the proposal unfold, it underscores the lasting influence Trump holds over certain factions of the GOP and the broader political landscape.
Whether this amendment gains traction or remains a symbolic gesture, it highlights ongoing discussions about leadership, governance, and the future direction of the United States.
