Race Day Live Winter weather warnings and advisories were in effect for seven states early Tuesday, as the National Weather Service (NWS) predicted up to 12 inches of snow in some areas.
The warnings stretched from Alaska to New York, with snow expected to cause disruptions in travel and power outages.
Freezing temperatures also pose health risks, especially for vulnerable groups like children and older adults.
At the time of writing, winter storm warnings were in place in Alaska and New York, while winter weather advisories affected Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania.
The areas most impacted included parts of northwestern New York, western Arizona, southwestern Colorado, northern Michigan, and northeastern Minnesota.
Snowfall forecasts varied across these states, but Hyder, Alaska, was expected to receive up to 15 inches. The NWS also warned of difficult travel conditions.
In the eastern Lake Ontario region of New York, the NWS expected up to 8 inches of snow, with strong winds potentially causing tree damage and scattered power outages.
Michigan was forecasted to see up to 10 inches of snow, with the NWS urging drivers to slow down and be cautious while traveling.
Meteorologists in affected areas shared updates on social media. The NWS Buffalo account on X (formerly Twitter) warned of “near whiteout conditions” due to moderate to heavy snow combined with strong winds.

In Michigan, the NWS Gaylord account reported a cold front moving through the region, leading to heavy snow and reduced visibility.
Central New York also faced widespread snow squalls, strong winds, and wind chills below zero, with meteorologist Bill Kardas noting that conditions could worsen in the coming days.
The winter storm warnings were set to remain in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday, while weather advisories would last until 5 a.m. Thursday.
As the storm continued to impact the region, travelers and residents were advised to stay alert and prepared for more snow and icy conditions.
