Atlanta, GA (RDL) – The Laken Riley Act was signed into law, enabling the imprisonment of criminal migrants.

President Donald Trump has signed the Laken Riley Act, which allows law police to imprison illegal immigrants who are apprehended for theft, attacking law officers, or inflicting serious injury or death to others.

The bipartisan legislation is the 47th president’s first major bill signed into law.

“President Trump just signed the Laken Riley act into law. Laken was senselessly murdered because of the previous Administration’s refusal to enforce our laws,” Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz, said on X. “America is safer because of President Trump and his Administration.”

The legislation is named after Laken Riley, a University of Georgia nursing student who was murdered in February 2024 by Venezuelan national Jose Antonio Ibarra. Ibarra had a prior record of theft in the United States but was freed from law enforcement custody before to the murder.

Even if they are not charged with additional offenses, individuals who enter the United States illegally are required to be detained and deported under US immigration law. ICE has not always been able to execute the law in recent years because to the Biden administration’s immigration parole and sanctuary policies, all of which Trump reversed in executive orders announced on his first day in office Monday.

According to a December 2024 letter leaked by Politico, ICE will require millions more in funding and tens of thousands extra detention beds to fully enforce the legislation.
