Deadline Approaching to Claim COVID Stimulus Check

2 min read

Eligible taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns yet have just over two months left to claim money from the first two COVID stimulus checks.

The IRS reminded taxpayers of the upcoming deadline, stating that most eligible individuals have already received the first two stimulus checks sent out in 2020.

To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for missed stimulus payments, taxpayers must file a tax return, even if they had minimal or no income from a job, business, or other sources.

The final deadline to file a claim for a refund for tax year 2020 is May 17, which is three years after the regular due date for 2020 tax returns.

During the pandemic, the IRS distributed three economic impact payments as relief. The first payment, authorized in March 2020, was $1,200 for individual filers and $2,400 for joint filers. The second, in December 2020, was $600 for individuals and $1,200 for joint filers.
