Mayor Tiffany Henyard of Dolton, Illinois, has vetoed calls for an FBI investigation into the town’s finances, including the alleged disappearance of millions of dollars.
The town’s Board of Trustees, U.S. attorney, Cook County sheriff, and state’s attorney had all supported the probe. Despite the veto, the FBI has initiated interviews related to the investigation.
Henyard, known for extravagant spending on travel, security, and personal grooming, receives a $300,000 annual salary as the mayor. She blames the town’s financial issues on the board, which she deems “incompetent.” Although she admits to a $2 million deficit, some estimate it could be as high as $5 million.
Travel expenses, including first-class trips to cities like Atlanta and New York City costing taxpayers over $67,000, have fueled controversy. Henyard has faced a failed recall attempt and a lawsuit from trustees but hasn’t been criminally charged.
Accusations include signing new contracts while leaving past contractors unpaid. Her charity, “Tiffany Henyard Cares,” shut down amid allegations of using taxpayer money and government resources.
