During the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Richmond Raceway, driver Joey Gase caused a stir by throwing his bumper cover at competitor Dawson Cram. The incident occurred under caution, adding a dramatic twist to the race.
With just 78 laps remaining in the 250-lap race, tensions escalated when Cram made contact with Gase’s bumper, sending him spinning into the wall. Gase emerged from his damaged car and, in a moment of frustration, tore off the rear bumper cover and hurled it towards Cram’s car as he circulated under caution.
Brad Keselowski acknowledged the intense emotions involved, stating that while he doesn’t condone Gase’s actions, he understands the frustration.
NASCAR officials retrieved the detached bumper cover for investigation, and potential penalties for Gase are pending. Typically, NASCAR considers the circumstances surrounding such incidents, but if a line is crossed, fines and penalties are issued.
Cram’s team radioed him to inquire about the incident, to which he explained that Gase had crossed his nose on exit, leading to the contact. Despite only pushing Gase for a brief moment, Cram’s team emphasized that any contact was unwarranted.

Following the incident, Gase expressed his disappointment with Cram’s actions, highlighting that he had given Cram an opportunity in Xfinity racing. Gase emphasized that his team, known for racing hard as a small outfit, had no intention of wrecking racecars.
Gase was evaluated and released from the infield care center, but the fallout from the incident continues to unfold as NASCAR assesses the situation.
