Whitewater, Wisconsin — Chad Richards, 23, a former UW-Whitewater wrestler from Loves Park, has been named as the suspect in the death of gymnast Kara Welsh on Friday.

On Friday, Aug. 30, officers arrived at the 100 block of West Whitewater Street to investigate allegations of a shooting and discovered Welsh, 21, dead from numerous gunshot wounds.

Officers also discovered Richards inside the apartment, according to officials.

Richards was familiar with Welsh, according to Whitewater Police, but no other information was provided. According to authorities, the two argued prior to the shooting.

“Kara was a true Warhawk – an amazing person, student, and athlete,” the university’s sports director, Ryan Callahan, said in an announcement. “We are all fortunate to have spent time with her over the last three years. She was selfless and made everyone around her better.

Richards faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety with a deadly weapon, and disorderly behavior while armed.

He is being held at the Walworth County Jail. He wrestled at both Harlem High School and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Welsh was a two-time All-American for the Wisconsin Whitewater gymnastics team.
