The St. Louis community is in grief following the death of a police officer who was struck by a suspected drunk driver on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, police officer David Lee was responding to a crash on Interstate 70 when a car in the eastbound lanes lost control, spun out, and hit Lee.
The victim of the first crash used Lee’s radio to ask for assistance. St. Louis firefighters came shortly after and transported him to the hospital for emergency surgery.
Lee, an 18-year member of the agency, died during surgery, according to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Commissioner Robert Tracy.
During a press conference on Sunday night, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones stated that Lee arrived at work prepared to serve the community. She described his death as “unfair and unjust,” and stated that she met with his wife, mother, mother-in-law, and two children.
“I ask that you join me in prayer for them,” stated the lady.
The 24-year-old suspect was arrested
Ramon Chavez-Rodriguez, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated in the death of a law enforcement officer and operating a vehicle on a highway without a legal license, Tracy said.
According to online records, he is set to appear in court on October 2.
