A man in Indiana was charged with murder after reportedly shooting and killing an unarmed man who he said was threatening him with a sword at his front door.
WKRC reported that on Saturday, 68-year-old Kevin Campbell called Indiana State Police and said there was a dead guy in his yard who had passed out.
At around 5 p.m. on October 26, Campbell said that the victim, Christopher Proctor, 41, knocked on his bedroom window.
He told the police that he went to his front door with his “small caliber rifle” in his hand. where he said he saw Proctor with a sword, and when Proctor came up to him with the sword, he shot him in the chest.
Police say he told them he was going to fire a warning shot to scare Proctor, but Proctor was later found to not have any weapons on him.
Campbell and Proctor were together for 11 months, but they are no longer seeing each other. It’s not clear what kind of relationship it was.
Chris Lane, the prosecutor for Floyd County, said that Proctor killed Campbell after going to her house twice on October 26. The first time was to drop off clothes.
Campbell is accused of staying in bed for 20 minutes after the shooting and then calling the police two hours later, which led to a charge of obstruction of justice.
Investigators say that he tried to move the body into the bed of his truck for two hours and only called the police when he realized he couldn’t.
WAVE says that he tried to hide the body of the man because he was afraid of getting in trouble. His phone was hidden in his car.
Campbell was arrested on the day of the killing and later charged with murder, manslaughter, criminal recklessness with a firearm, and obstructing justice.
Proctor’s death notice says that he had a “complicated life” but that he “never gave up trying.” He didn’t give up the good fight. At the time of his death, he was working as a builder renovating homes.
