Dog Recognizes Owner After Five Months Lost in the Wilderness, Captured on Video

2 min read

An adorable movie shows a dog that was lost in the woods of Greenville County, South Carolina, and lived for five months before meeting her owner.

The husky mix, named Oakley, was one of four dogs that a dog trainer left in the woods around June, according to a Facebook post from Anakin’s Trails Stray and Pet Recovery on Sunday. The dogs had been roaming around Greenville County since then.

Oakley wasn’t seen for weeks after Hurricane Helene until she was finally caught on camera again. The rescue service then started setting up a trap for her.

Rescuers said Oakley was caught in a homemade trap with food bait, which is often used to help get scared or skittish dogs back to their owners. They said that another dog in the same situation is still out there and that the group is working to catch her too.

On the video of the reunion, Oakley slowly walks up to her owner, looking like she’s not sure what to do at first. Because she was going through what Anakin’s Trails Stray and Pet Recovery called “lost dog syndrome,” Oakley didn’t look for her family at first.

But Oakley’s memory came back to him after a few careful sniffs. Oakley spends the rest of the video clip kissing her people while her tail wags and her body moves around.

Even though Oakley’s happy ending has already happened, the rescue said in other Facebook posts that Oakley’s sister Juno, who was also dumped, is pregnant and still on the run. A report released on Thursday said that Juno is about one month pregnant and has another month before her puppies come. The post said, “Getting Juno is our main goal right now.”

Nova Jo, Oakley’s mom, was found early in the search, and so was her sister Marley. The other dogs that went missing were later found and with their families.

The rescue team didn’t have any more information to share about the trainer or any new details about the incident.
