HADDON TWP. — The Attorney General’s Office says that a township police officer shot and killed a man during a fight at a Westmont apartment complex.
A statement said that the man was found in a stairwell at a West Crystal Lake Avenue building at 1:07 a.m. after police responded to a 911 call about a burglary in progress.
It was said that the man had a knife on him.
“During an interaction in the stairwell, an officer fired his service weapon, striking the male,” it said.
Police and emergency medical workers helped at the scene, but the guy died at Cooper University Hospital in Camden about an hour later.
The statement said that a knife was found at the scene.
The Attorney General’s Office did not provide any further details, such as the names of the people involved or the location of the apartment complex.
It said that a probe was still going on, which is what the law says must happen whenever someone dies while dealing with a police officer in the course of their job.
The investigation’s results will be shown to a grand jury, which will decide if there is enough proof to charge one or more police officers with a crime.
