KEWASKUM, Wisconsin — A mother and her toddler were brought to the hospital as a precaution after a fire broke out in their Kewaskum home on Monday.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said it received a complaint of an active kitchen fire shortly before 11:30 a.m. at a home in the 3000 block of Highway 28. An adult resident saw flames in the kitchen and contacted 911.

Before emergency crews arrived, all people had evacuated the home. Two dogs needed help to escape. The Kewaskum Fire Department suppressed the fire, but parts of the house were severely damaged.

According to the preliminary inquiry, the woman and her child were at home when she heard a popping sound in the kitchen. She discovered fire and instantly called for aid. They fled, trailed by an upstairs tenant.

The Wisconsin Red Cross was recruited to help the residents. Highway 28 was closed for approximately an hour for firefighting operations.

The fire is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office. There were no further details revealed.
