An Alabama community is in grief following the death of a high school quarterback who suffered a brain injury during the school’s season opener on Friday night, according to school officials and the teen’s family.

Caden Tellier was transported to the hospital in critical condition after suffering a head injury during John T. Morgan Academy’s game versus visiting Southern Academy, officials reported Friday night, and his death was revealed the following day.

Tellier was sixteen, according to CNN affiliate WSFA. He suffered a brain injury, according to Alabama Independent School Association Executive Director Michael McLendon’s social media post. Officials did not provide information on how Tellier was hurt.

“Our boy, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face to face,” Tellier’s parents stated in a statement on Saturday. “Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity, and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself one more time.”

Bryan Oliver, the school’s headmaster, confirmed Tellier’s organ donation, according to AL.com.

“Lives have been touched by the way he lived, and now lives will be saved as a result of his passing,” his parents stated.

Oliver described Tellier as a brilliant beacon in the corridors of the Selma, Alabama, private school.

“He was a student, a buddy, an athlete, and most importantly, a Christ follower. “There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family,” Oliver wrote in a social media post.

The Tellier family stated that a service will be held soon. Morgan Academy authorities have canceled all school events this week, according to the school association.
