Police say a 61-year-old man from Arlington died at the hospital after starting a fire in his home that spread and shooting at his wife when she told him to put out the fire.

A bullet missed the woman, and an officer got some minor burns while trying to save the suspect from the fire, Arlington police said in a news statement.

It was a strange case. At 5:45 p.m. Monday, police were called to the 800 block of Connolly Terrace for a shooting call and found the house on fire. Police said the fire began in the backyard and was moving into the house.

When the police arrived, they saw a 61-year-old woman who had been hit by a bullet. The victim told the cops that her husband had been having problems with his physical and mental health. They had a fire in the yard, and she told him to put it out. But he pulled out a gun and shot her.

A friend helped the wife get to their house, where she asked them to call 911. She was taken to the hospital with injuries that did not put her life in danger.

In the backyard, police found her husband under a pile of burning brush. He had severe burns and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The man had died, and the police were told about it Tuesday morning.
