Armed Kidnapping in Missouri Leads to High-Speed Chase into Kansas

VERNON CO., Mo. — Law enforcement agencies in Missouri and Kansas are being praised for their coordinated efforts in stopping an armed kidnapping in Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas.

Around 10:30 a.m. today, Vernon County Sheriff Mike Buehler reported that his office was notified about a man armed with a weapon and wearing body armor who had kidnapped a child from El Dorado Springs.

The suspect was reportedly driving toward Nevada on Highway 54. Vernon County deputies quickly responded and attempted to intercept the suspect.

Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle as it crossed the state line into Kansas, where the chase ended in Fort Scott.

The suspect was taken into custody without any injuries.

Sheriff Buehler credited the successful outcome to the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, including the Cedar County Sheriff’s Department, El Dorado Police Department, Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, Nevada Police Department, Vernon County Dispatch, Bourbon County Sheriff’s Department, Fort Scott Police Department, Bates County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri Highway Patrol, and Kansas Highway Patrol.

“Working together and partnering with all agencies is the best way to protect the citizens and children of any county in the United States,” Buehler said.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
