In a recent survey conducted by a panel of experts specializing in the American presidency, President Biden was ranked 14th-best president, while his likely 2024 presidential opponent, former President Donald Trump, found himself at the bottom of the list.
The 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey took place from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 and included members of the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association, the foremost organization of social science experts in presidential politics.
Abraham Lincoln was ranked as America’s greatest president by the experts.
Biden secured the 14th spot, placing him ahead of Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and Ulysses S. Grant. Former President Barack Obama experienced a notable rise, landing at the 7th position—eight spots higher than the previous year.
In contrast, former President Donald Trump received the lowest ranking in the survey at 45, placing below James Buchanan at 44th, Andrew Johnson at 43rd, Franklin Pierce at 42nd, and William Henry Harrison at 41st.
Partisan differences emerged in the rankings for Obama and Biden. Democrats rated them significantly higher, with an average rank of 6th for Obama and 13th for Biden. Republicans, however, ranked them at 15th and 30th, respectively.
The survey provides a nuanced evaluation of historical presidential impact. With Biden securing the 14th spot and Trump landing at the bottom, discussions arise about the criteria used for evaluation and the enduring impact of various presidencies on American history.
