Big Social Security Update Coming Soon – Are You Prepared?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced major changes to benefit claims and direct deposit procedures this week.

Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek stated that the agency will introduce new identity verification processes to improve security and service.

“Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with the highest level of integrity and care,” Dudek said. “The agency has relied on outdated methods for too long. These changes will better protect Americans while improving service efficiency.”

The SSA will now require either online digital identity proofing or in-person verification for benefit claims. Claims can no longer be completed over the phone.

However, individuals who cannot use the “My Social Security” online portal can still begin their claim by phone but will need to verify their identity in person to complete the process.

To schedule an in-person appointment, the agency recommends calling 800-772-1213.

Completing claims may become more difficult for some people, as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) plans to close nearly 50 Social Security offices nationwide.

The SSA will implement these changes through a two-week transition period, ending on March 31. After that, the new identity proofing requirements will take effect.

Those without a “My Social Security” account can create one at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.

In addition to the identity verification changes, direct deposit updates will now be processed within one day.

Dudek, a 25-year federal employee, was recently promoted to lead the SSA by the Trump Administration.

This comes after the SSA launched an investigation into Dudek for allegedly sharing information with DOGE associates.

In a memo to staff, Dudek acknowledged past mistakes, stating, “I have made mistakes, which makes me human like you.

I promise I will continue to learn from them and make decisions with the best intentions for this agency, the people we serve, and you.”
